Happy Fourth of July from Wefings Marine !

We hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying the summer.  We've got quite a bit to share with you so we'll just get right to it....

New Sundance Models

New Sundance models.  Sundance Boats, one of the brands Wefings Marine proudly sells, is introducing a few new models for 2009/2010. Forthcoming is an all new 17 Foot Technical Poling Skiff called the "Flicker 17" that should reset the bar on a practical and purely functional flats skiff. Powered with anything from a 25 HP four stroke Yamaha to a 60 HP High Thrust four stroke Yamaha, it will be a winner with standard integrated Poling Platform/Drivers Backrest unit, Trolling Motor Wiring, Livewell, Console Cooler , Push Pole Holder, and much more.

This style of boat has gone through many incarnations of faster, lighter, higher tech, more expensive but for most of us with standard size egos, it all boils down to one thing. A great boat design, at a great price, with a great dealer, and manufacturer to back it up.

Also available are the NX Series Sundance boats that have been in the works for some time and are a very functional blend of a bay boat's true V entry with a more skiff like aft section .This incorporates "pocket drive" for shallower motor down draft and performance and a modified yet shallow dead rise at the stern for  "better than skiff" comfort..  This should make for a super versatile craft with the attributes many builders have been striving for and customers have been waiting for, but until now, not quite able to nail down with the value, quality and integrity that Sundance represents.

We had a chance to preview the first of this new line back in April and were very impressed.  See our test reports in Marc's blog. Here and Here.

This boat will come in 17, 19, 21, 23, and 25 foot models. Yamaha power is standard and other power is available upon request.

That's what great boating is made of. That's what we strive for. Check our website or Sundance Boats site for more info.

Scallop Season Almost Here!

One of my absolute favorite summer activities will be also opening July First, Scalloping!

There are few things quite as much fun as hunting bay scallops in the warm waters of our local hotspots. St Joe Bay, Lanark Village and St Marks areas are the preferred grounds for us locally, and all have reported Scallops from scouting reports. It's pretty low key fun, great for children of all ages ,and the Scallops are delicious eating . Be sure you have your proper dive flag and familiarize yourself with the rules regarding quantities, as you will surely meet an officer of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission with a friendly and courteous inspection. The season opens July 1 and runs through September 10.  An overview of the regulations can be found here on the FWC web site.

The clear clear waters of St. Joe Bay and other area waters teem with these succulent little delicacies.  Plan a trip to our area this scallop season and use one of our rental fleet to get out on the bay and make a day of snorkeling and scalloping, fun for the whole family.

We have seen renewed interest in new boat purchases which is encouraging news for the boat industry, and are looking forward to seeing our great country that will celebrate its 233rd birthday this July 4th recover soon from our financial woes sooner than later. We all need to remember that we do live in the greatest country on earth and be proud of it and stand united.

Where To Stay In Franklin County?

We know that many of our friends from out of town travel with their C-Dory or Ranger on-the-water homes with them.  However, a lot of folks don't yet have a fully equipped cruiser home and even when you do, sometimes it is nice to hole up in a special spot for a night or two.  We'll bring you a selection of some of our favorite local places to do just that from time to time.  Also, if you live outside our area and are considering a new boat purchase, please keep our Free Lodging offer in mind.

The Coombs House Inn

When the Coombs House was built in 1905 it was generally referred to as "the most elegant house in Apalachicola" for its black cypress wall paneling, nine fireplaces, a twelve foot high entrance hall, ornate light fixtures, and a carved oak staircase leading up to the second floor past leaded glass windows. Indoor plumbing featuring a claw-footed bathtub may not have been considered part of the home's elegance, but was still a rare and convenient luxury for that time and place.

Lynn Wilson, a well known interior designer of luxury hotel properties, and her airline executive husband, Bill Spohrer, paid their first visit to Apalachicola in 1978.  Lyn Was quickly enamored with the Coombs House but was appalled at the ruin it had been allowed to fall into.  After several years of searching out the owners, Lynn and Bill were finally able to purchase the house and    reconstruction began. Lynn, who had renovated such historic grand hotels in Florida as the Biltmore in Coral Gables and the Vinoy Hotel in St. Petersburg, decided that the Coombs House could only be saved if converted to an inn, thus providing the motivation and the funds for preservation and maintenance. Using only local carpenters, craftsmen and painters, the project proceeded slowly. Lynn designed and built 11 additional bathrooms in such a way as to appear that they had always been an integral part of the house. A small modern kitchen was installed, balconies rebuilt, and beams replaced. Finally the renovation of the Coombs House was completed in August, 1994. Lynn furnished the house, now named "The Coombs House Inn", with antiques and paintings of the period, many taken from her personal collection.

The resulting Inn is a place Bill, Lynn and all of Apalachicola are proud of.  Garnering much praise and many awards, including "Best Bed and breakfast Inn in Florida" from the readers of Florida Monthly Magazine the Inn is a favorite destination for many travelers to our area.
